Biography:
Prof. Charles M Rice, having served on committees for the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization, is the head of the Laboratory for Virology and Infectious Disease and the Director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Institute for Global Infectious Disease Research at The Rockefeller University in New York. He was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Millions of people are infected with hepatitis C or hepatitis B viruses, which cause liver cancer and liver failure. Meanwhile, other RNA viruses such as Zika, yellow fever, dengue, chikunguya and the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus cause significant morbidity and mortality. Professor Rice works to understand virus replication and innate immune responses that limit infection. His work has enabled the development of new antiviral drugs capable of reducing HCV to undetectable levels in infected persons, essentially curing chronic infection.
