Prof. Craig C. Mello
2006 Nobel Laureate for Medicine at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase/USA
Prof. Mello’s discovery has opened up an entirely new area of biology. It is expected to lead to medical breakthroughs in the fight against cancer and other diseases.
Biography:
Prof. Craig Cameron Mello is the Blais University Chair in Molecular Medicine, the Co-Director of the RNA Therapeutics Institute and a Distinguished Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School as well as an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Center who was awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of RNA interference (RNAi) and the use of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to induce gene silencing. The injection of dsRNA silences a given gene by tricking the cell into destroying the gene’s messenger RNA (mRNA). The use of RNAi to silence genes has become a key molecular tool to understanding organismal development, gene function and disease. Professor Mello’s discovery has opened up an entirely new area of biology, and RNAi is now widely and routinely used in research. It is expected to lead to medical breakthroughs in the fight against cancer and other diseases.
