Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn

1987 Nobel Laureate for Chemistry at the College de France in Paris/France

Professor Lehn contributed important research in the area of artificial photosynthesis and the storage and chemical conversion of solar energy.

Biography:

Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn is Professor at the University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS), where he holds the Chair of Chemistry of Complex Systems. He also directs the Laboratory of Supramolecular Chemistry at the ISIS (Institut de Science et d’Ingénierie Supramoléculaires). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987 together with Prof. Donald J. Cram and Prof. Charles Pedersen for their contributions to the basic understanding of molecular recognition processes that concern in particular vital chemical functions of molecules in living organisms. Over the years Professor Lehn’s work led him to the definition of a new field of chemistry, which he proposed calling “supramolecular chemistry” as it deals with the entities formed by the association of chemical species held together by intermolecular forces. The area developed into the chemistry of “self-organization” processes that lead to the emergence of complex matter. It involves “adaptive chemistry”, dynamic networks and complex systems. Professor Lehn also contributed important research in the area of artificial photosynthesis and the storage and chemical conversion of solar energy.

Topic of keynote speech:

  • Steps towards complex matter
